The Poem:

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai
Dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-qaatil mein hai
aye watan Karta nahin kyun doosra kuch baat-cheet
Dekhta hun main jise woh chup teri mehfil mein hai
Aye shaheed-e-mulk-o-millat main tere oopar nisaar
Ab teri himmat ka charcha ghair ki mehfil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai
Waqt aanay dey bata denge tujhe aye aasman
Hum abhi se kya batayen kya hamare dil mein hai
Khainch kar layee hai sab ko qatl hone ki ummeed
Aashiqon ka aaj jumghat koocha-e-qaatil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai
Hai liye hathiyaar dushman taak mein baitha udhar
Aur hum taiyyaar hain seena liye apna idhar
Hum to ghar se nikle hi the baandhkar sar pe kafan
Jaan hatheli par liye lo barh chale hain ye qadam
Zindagi to apni mehmaan maut ki mehfil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai
Yuun khadaa maqtal mein qaatil kah rahaa hai baar baar
Kya tamannaa-e-shahaadat bhi kisee ke dil mein hai
Dil mein tuufaanon ki toli aur nason mein inqilaab
Hosh dushman ke udaa denge humein roko na aaj
Duur reh paaye jo humse dam kahaan manzil mein hai
Wo jism bhi kya jism hai jismein na ho khoon-e-junoon
Kya lade toofaanon se jo kashti-e-saahil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai.
Dekhna hai zor kitna baazuay qaatil mein hai.[7]

Translation:

The desire for revolution is in our hearts
Let us see what strength there is in the arms of our executioner
Why do you remain silent thus?
Whoever I see, is gathered quiet so…
O martyr of country, of nation, I submit myself to thee
For yet even the enemy speaks of thy courage
The desire for struggle is in our hearts…
When the time comes, we shall show thee, O heaven
For why should we tell thee now, what lurks in our hearts?
We have been dragged to service, by the hope of blood, of vengeance
Yea, by our love for nation divine, we go to the streets of the enemy
The desire for struggle is in our hearts…
Armed does the enemy sit, ready to open fire
Ready too are we, our bosoms thrust out to him
With blood we shall play Holi, if our nation need us
The desire for struggle is in our hearts…
No sword can sever hands that have the heat of battle within,
No threat can bow heads that have risen so…
Yea, for in our insides has risen a flame,
and the desire for struggle is in our hearts…
Set we out from our homes, our heads shrouded with cloth,
Taking our lives in our hands, do we march so…
In our assembly of death, life is now but a guest
The desire for struggle is in our hearts…
Stands the enemy in the gallows thus, asking,
Does anyone wish to bear testimony?…
With a host of storms in our heart, and with revolution in our breath,
We shall knock the enemy cold, and no one shall stop us…
What is that body that does not have hot blood in it,
How can a person conquer a Typhoon while sitting in a boat near the shore.
The desire for struggle is in our hearts,
We shall now see what strength there is in the boughs of the enemy.

Background:
This is a great and a very well-known poem written by Ram Prasad Bismil who was an Indian Fighter. He was working against the British forces at the time who was ruling their country. He wanted to freed his people from the British people so he wrote this poem in order to instill in them a desire to fight for their nation.
It has been a very famous poem used at every patriotic occasion. The poem was 1st used in 1965 in the movie Shaheed which was on the life of Bhagat Singh and was on Manoj Kumar.
Then it was used in 2002 as a song with altered lines in an Indian movie called The legend of Bhagat Singh. Then again this poem was used in 2006 Amir Khan’s movie Rang de Basanti.

Structure:
It is a patriotic poem addressing to the general public to wake them up and fight for their rights before it’s too late. It is a lyrical poem having 7 stanzas with rhyming words in the end.
Analysis:
The poet starts of by expressing what he has hidden in his heart by saying

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai
Dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-qaatil mein hai

He is expressing his desire to fight and challenging the enemies that he is now ready to see how much power they have. From the very start of the poem he is in a wild mood and he can’t wait now as he is desperate to get what was his i.e. his land, his country.

aye watan Karta nahin kyun doosra kuch baat-cheet
Dekhta hun main jise woh chup teri mehfil mein hai
Aye shaheed-e-mulk-o-millat main tere oopar nisaar
Ab teri himmat ka charcha ghair ki mehfil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Then he is addressing to the country in a very demanding and melancholic tone that oh country why is everyone quiet? Why is no one talking about it and why is it only me who is trying so hard? Why can’t anyone else see that what’s ours is being taken away from us and still we are quiet? Why? Then he is talking to the people to have given up their lives and assuring them that their loss was of use and that he is ready to sacrifice his life too. He is basically sad to see the situation of the people as they have failed to acknowledge the losses of their ancestors although even the enemies appreciate what they did.

Waqt aanay dey bata denge tujhe aye aasman
Hum abhi se kya batayen kya hamare dil mein hai
Khainch kar layee hai sab ko qatl hone ki ummeed
Aashiqon ka aaj jumghat koocha-e-qaatil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Now he is addressing the sky and the heavens that why should I tell you what I want to do? He is asking for time as in he will tell what he wants at the right time. For now he is at the stake of life and death. He is in front of his enemies without any help and he is ready to give up his life. For he has love of his nation in his heart.

Hai liye hathiyaar dushman taak mein baitha udhar
Aur hum taiyyaar hain seena liye apna idhar
Khoon se khelenge holi gar vatan muskhil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

He is expressing his critical situation. He says that our enemies are well equipped and are ready to kill us but he says we still are not afraid of anything because this day all we want is to fight or to die. We won’t go back. We are ready to fight even if we get killed in the procedure but we still will won as it would be a part of the struggle for our country and no matter how long would it take, it definitely would pay in the end.

Here he blatantly announces war and says now no one can calm him down and that no sword or no voice can make them stay in limits. Now no one can make them stay quiet as they have risen for their rights and they won’t sit down before they get what they want. They wouldn’t just go away if they are made to go by showing terror or anything else as they have a heat of battle within themselves and the desire to win their nation back.

Hum to ghar se nikle hi the baandhkar sar pe kafan
Jaan hatheli par liye lo barh chale hain ye qadam
Zindagi to apni mehmaan maut ki mehfil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Now he expresses his desire to die. He says that when we got out of our homes all we wanted was to die or win. Nothing in between. We set out without lives on our hands and so we are not scared to die anymore as all we want is to win our nation back.

Yuun khadaa maqtal mein qaatil kah rahaa hai baar baar
Kya tamannaa-e-shahaadat bhi kisee ke dil mein hai
Dil mein tuufaanon ki toli aur nason mein inqilaab
Hosh dushman ke udaa denge humein roko na aaj
Duur reh paaye jo humse dam kahaan manzil mein hai
Wo jism bhi kya jism hai jismein na ho khoon-e-junoon
Kya lade toofaanon se jo kashti-e-saahil mein hai
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai.
Dekhna hai zor kitna baazuay qaatil mein hai

In the end he says that only thinking to do something won’t help. We can only help someone and win something only when we will fight for it. We can’t knock down our enemies by just sitting in our homes and expecting them to die. We should get out and do it ourselves. He says that we are not true patriots if we don’t have this desire in our hearts.

Theme:
The main theme of the poem is about instilling in the people a desire to fight for their nation and their rights. The poet is trying to make the people aware of their situation and asking them to try because without trying they can’t get what they desire for. The poet is all ready to fight and has his life at stake but he is not afraid of dying but instead his desire goes up and up with the time.

Summary:
The poem starts with the poet expressing his desire of the struggle he wants to do for his nation and his people. Then he is addressing to the country who has forgotten their ancestors work and struggle. He is talking to the sky telling it that he is ready to die and be a martyr. He knows that the enemies are well equipped but he doesn’t care as now he will die or win his nation back. He says that none can stop them now and break their dreams apart as they are fearless and have a desire of struggle in their hearts which they will try to achieve no matter what.
