This poem, Nirjhharer Swapna Bhanga is an immortal creation of Rabindranath Tagore. Here he relates the flow of the stream or a fountain to the flow of the vitalities of life. Written around the great partition of Bengal movement, this poem clearly brings out the superseded spirit of the men for the Indian independence and thus there is clear connection between the stream of the river and the life of the human beings.

Background
This poem is related to the Indian search of independence. The life of men is chained. They are choked under the yoke of the imperialism. They want enfranchisement and thus they resort to the revolutions. They get the call from the innate self. The call makes them take a great rise on their spirits. After the upheaval of the spirits the people urge to break free through the jails that are around them.

Structure
This poem is written in regular meter. The lines are rhymed in couplets. There is a breach in this regularity in the middle and there the rhyme is between the first and the third lines. The break of the rhythm can be related to the varied movements of the stream. There are many figures of speech vividly used and that creates mesmerizing imagery to the readers. The poem has clear uses of the personifications, the metaphor and the simili. This poem is a great example of a lyrical ballad as well which has a song like motive and a great tale to tell behind it.

Summary
The lives of men are compared to the movement of the stream. The cataracts and the fountains are stuck in the glaciers on the high mountains. The sun gives a call that is the rays of the sun fall on the rock. The snow melts and thus the stream starts. It has to break free from the ice. This struggle is echoed in the lives of the men of the imperial India. Men want to break open the fangs of imperialism but they cannot get away from it so easily. The call of the enfranchisement comes from outside and upheavals the spirit. Thus they go for the revolutions. This poem is written as if everyone can enjoy the meaning yet there is a deep rooted allegory in it.

Importance of the poem
Written in his early adulthood this poem bears the clear idea of the nationalism behind it. The depiction of the urge to freedom is clear. This poem echoes the time of the epoch. A reading through it instils the joy of the youth and the spirit of a waterfall to get through the jail of the snow and do good to the society.
